How this

Works

The Emerald Couch logo providing therapy in Denver Colorado

We see life as chapters in an unfinished book.

Let us help you tackle your most difficult chapters, together. We have an easy step-by-step process that will help you on your journey to healing:

STEP ONE

Reach Out

Call us or schedule a time to talk with our Practice Manager to see if our practice can fit your needs. Once you are scheduled with our therapist you will receive an invitation to our client portal to complete paperwork online before your appointment.

Right Fit

STEP TWO

We want to make sure we are able to provide you with the right therapist and treatment. If we are unable to provide the proper therapy or if is not a good fit we can refund your session. Our assessment can help us point you in the direction to a trusted provider that can better suit your needs.

Treatment
Plan

STEP THREE

Your treatment will begin with an intake session where we gather the needed information to collaboratively develop your custom treatment plan. This includes what success looks like and feels like for you. As we continue to work together, we will check in periodically on your progress towards the goals we set together.

STEP FOUR

Maintenance Mode

As you conquer your goals, you will eventually move into maintenance mode, which is short for living the life you want to be living. You may not need therapy as often as issues have become manageable and you now have the tools now to continue on with your life.

Check In

STEP FIVE

We will have built a relationship that you can come back and see us anytime. We are always here for you so you never have to start over.

Your Therapy Foundation

Finding a therapist right for you:

For a strong therapy foundation, you need a therapist that you can trust - one who hears you and who can help you create goals that are achievable. This is crucial in order to have in-depth, beneficial therapy in every single session. At The Emerald Couch, our relationship with our clients is part of our core values but will always want to make sure your choice in therapist is right for you.

Here are several questions to consider when picking your therapist:

  1. Do I trust this person?

  2. Can I speak freely with them?

  3. Do we both agree on what my goals?

  4. Do we agree on how to work towards those goals?

  5. Am I getting better?

Haven’t found the right therapist yet?

If you answer no to any of the questions above, it might be because you haven’t found the right therapist – and that’s okay. On average, people go through three therapists before they find the right person to help them conquer their mental and emotional needs. If this is you, let’s set some time to talk through your options.

Are there situations keeping you from seeking help?

Resource availability like time or money.

We understand that your time is precious and not everyone feels as though their finances can support therapy. We believe that happiness and calm is worthwhile, and that the time you spend in therapy getting treatment can affect the trajectory of the rest of your life. Therapy is an investment in yourself and your mental health. We are specialists and what we do is backed by education and experience.

First time in therapy.

We recognize that engaging in therapy is a huge leap of faith and it may feel unsettling to not know what you're getting yourself into. Let’s clarify what therapy is not. Therapy isn’t for “crazy people”, it isn’t a one time appointment to solve all your problems, it isn’t linear, it isn’t a one-size fits all. Therapy is for anyone who feels like their mental health is getting in the way of their day-to-day life. Therapy is a tool for you to help make your life better. Therapy is mental health care. Therapy is not judgmental. Therapy is a journey and will take time to achieve your goals and what you want to get out of it. Therapy is a safe space for you to share, be raw and know that you are not alone.

Stigma around therapy.

We also understand the urge to hide your problems due to shame or fear. We are not here to judge - if anything, we are here to help you judge yourself less. If there are things you are scared to talk about, you don’t have to share them the first time we meet. We want to create a trusting relationship with you to address your concerns and launch you into the life you deserve.

Fear of addressing pain.

Learning to trust someone while struggling with pain, like PTSD, trauma or phobias, is hard. You may feel shame or responsibility for what has happened, or be worried that you have to start talking about your past trauma immediately. We put your comfort first and will build a relationship of trust before diving into any triggering events. As trauma specialists, we have lots of tools and experience that can help. It is not a one-size-fit-all solution here and have several treatment options to ensure we find the right one for you. By working with an entire spectrum of traumas, we are here to help you tackle them all large or small to help you ease your suffering.

Here for you.

Common Questions

  • Our providers accept Lyra and some accept Aetna, but we are considered an out-of-network provider for all other insurance companies, which means we do not directly bill your insurance provider. You pay up front for your session and you may or may not be reimbursed by your insurance company. Please call your insurance company and learn about your coverage around mental health benefits and out-of-network providers. We happily supply super bills for reimbursement.

  • If you are struggling, we can help you or we can help you find someone else that can help you.

  • It is different for every client. Because we tailor our services to your needs, we can’t be sure. Most people start to feel better or see some improvement around 4 - 6 weeks. We make the decision together on your goals and when you feel you have reached them.

  • Treatment almost always starts as weekly appointments because we want to get you feeling better as soon as possible and cover our get-to-know-you phase of therapy. We also offer virtual appointments for those who may need them. Once you start to feel stable we can discuss a different pace that works for you.

  • You can submit a contact form at any time. We will try to get back to you within 24 hours via phone. We will ask you a few questions and then schedule a therapy session. Our standard business hours are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm MST.

  • We don’t prescribe medication as a psychologist is not the same as a physician. However, we do have people we can refer you to if that is something you are interested in.

  • To be a psychologist, we have completed a doctorate level program, including a one-year full-time internship. After we receive our degree, we then have post-doctoral year of training which is required in the state of Colorado. Most other mental health professionals, including marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers and professional counselors, complete a master’s degree that also includes clinical training. We have completed additional training to specialize in the treatments we offer. If you have questions or need further understanding, we are here to help.

  • No we do not provide crisis services. If you are having a mental health crisis please call the statewide crisis line for Colorado at 1-844-493-8255 or text TALK to 38255. You can also call or text 988 if you are experiencing mental health–related distress.

  • Therapy is 100% confidential as it is protected by HIPAA just as any other medical appointment you may have.

  • We currently offer a combination of both in-person and virtual appointments to our clients. We try to honor your preferences based on availability and current precautions.

  • We are constantly adapting our policies to current health recommendations. We are happy to discuss any special needs you might have around this.

  • Yes it is! If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to us.

  • Unfortunately, we are not medicaid providers and we are not allowed to treat medicaid clients even if they can pay for our services out-of-pocket. Doing so would jeopardize your medicaid coverage.

  • We do not treat active substance abuse or active eating disorders. We believe those needs are better handled in facilities that are built to help support and treat an individual with a team for support. We don’t provide court ordered therapy or custody evaluations.

  • Unfortunately, we don’t treat children. We specialize in adults and teens 15 and older. If you are needing help finding care for your child, we can provide referrals upon request.

You have the power to change your life trajectory.

If you are ready to feel better, to overcome, to heal, to truly prioritize your mental health – we are here for you and will help you take that first step.
